You see, that can of Good Boy Ginger Beer you’re holding, or thinking about holding soon, isn’t just another adult beverage made for your refreshment. It’s a true collaboration between artist and brewer - that artist being mildly renowned Sunshine Coast four-piece pop storytellers Phil & The Blanks; and that brewery being the ones paying for this website, Blackflag.

Collaboration comes in many forms. In some cases, it’s a true division of labour and ideas. In some cases, it’s muse and sculptor. This was not either of those cases. In the development of this outstanding example of ginger beer, Blackflag brewed a number of very delicious options, and Phil & The Blanks got to taste them and help us pick which one went in the can. And we think that’s for the best. We hope you agree.

    What a time to be alive, hey?

    The most overrated band on the Sunshine Coast Phil and The Blanks has buddied up with the irresistibly naughty Blackflag Brewing to bring you the definitive taste of summer.

    To celebrate Phil and The Blanks' debut single “GOOD BOY” being heard over 2.5 million times, our pals at Blackflag have produced what can only be described as a party in a can. They have brewed us a limited edition Ginger Beer, called it “GOOD BOY”, and even put a pair of sunnies on the can for good measure! Frankly it's probably going to make us as rich and famous as Benson Boone.

    GOOD BOY alcoholic Ginger Beer is a triumph of the brewer's art. We understand it's brewed using locally sourced Buderim Ginger, eight secret Sunshine Coast herbs and spices picked from our hinterland rain forests all infused in a vat of purified unicorn tears and a splash of BBQ sauce… obviously we don't actually know this because we’re just four unemployed blokes in a band, but that's what GOOD BOY Ginger Beer tasted like to us!

    And here's the best bit, at a thirst quenching 4% it's perfectly legal to drink, assuming you are 18 or over and down with the whole "responsible chugging" vibe.

    Phil took his first sip and shouted “It's so refreshing - it’s the future, I now hate all other drinks!”

    We are now looking forward to casually standing outside Dan Murphy's in our fishing shirts hoping we get recognised when Australia's discerning drinkers toddle off to their ute, a slab of GOOD BOY under their arm, excitedly heading home for a (responsible) 'Binge on the Ginge'.

    Thank you Blackflag, you have shown us that even for the little phella, wet dreams can come true… errr (“wet" as in liquid that is, you know, beverages and that…).

    It’s rare in life to feel true moments of reflection.

    I experienced such a moment when one of the geniuses in marketing showed me a photo of four blokes in fishing shirts and messed up sunglasses and said “we’re doing a ginger beer with this band”.

    My mind unsubscribed at that moment, and took one of those film flashbacks through time to 11th Century China, where ginger beer was first brewed as a remedy to balance the body’s wellbeing, to the 18th Century, where ginger crossed the Caribbean to English colonies, brewed there for its zesty and fiery qualities. To 1940s Los Angeles where an enterprising bar owner mixed an over order of ginger beer with vodka, lime and those cute little copper cups to create the Moscow Mule. And to Bermuda, where sailors mixed dark rum and ginger beer to reveal the Dark ‘n Stormy, and every hangover to follow.

    Ginger beer. Born of natural ingredients and the magic of fermentation, a beverage that has shaped history and provided billions of people with refreshment and enjoyment. I thought “who are we to even attempt to shape this next chapter in its evolution?”

    The marketing guy was still talking. “They do that song ‘Good Boy’”.

    “Oh, fuck yeah.” I said.
