At Blackflag, we love celebrating the trailblazers who put the Sunshine Coast on the map, and few have soared higher than Ryan “R-Willy” Williams. Born and raised right here on the Coast, Williams stands as a global inspiration for anyone who dreams big—and rides even bigger.
From Caloundra to Nitro Circus.
Williams’ journey started at the local skateparks of Caloundra. While most kids picked up BMX bikes or skateboards, Williams initially honed his craft on a scooter—a choice met with skepticism and some local ribbing. Instead of folding under pressure, he harnessed his passion, eventually shifting to BMX at age 15. His commitment quickly paid off: a viral video in 2012 catapulted him onto the world stage as part of Nitro Circus, where he continues pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.
Breaking records and landing firsts.
Williams is well known for his creativity and courage. He’s landed over a dozen “world’s first” tricks—including BMX triple frontflips and 1440˚ spins—mixing innovation with daring athleticism. Across X Games and Nitro World Games events, he’s racked up more than 10 gold medals and made history as the only athlete to medal in both scooter and BMX at the same event. His victories at X Games Japan and California cemented the Sunshine Coast’s reputation on the action sports map.
Giving back: R-Willy Land.
Despite global fame, Williams remains grounded in his roots. In 2019, he purchased a sprawling 40-acre property near Eudlo to create “R-Willy Land”—the first Australian action sports facility featuring a mega ramp. From training international athletes to hosting world-class camps, Williams is turning his land into a “Disneyland for extreme sports,” all while keeping it a homegrown Sunshine Coast project.
Inspiring generations.
For Williams, the Coast’s laid-back spirit is part of his DNA. Even after conquering international competitions, he’s credited his success to lessons learned at local skateparks, the support of his family (including his BMX-racing mother), and the encouragement found in a close-knit community. Whether it’s mentoring the next generation or representing our region on the world stage, Williams shows what’s possible when you mix grit, imagination, and a dash of coastal pride.
Raise a beer to Ryan Williams—our hometown hero, and a living legend who rides for the Sunshine Coast and for daring dreamers everywhere.
